Technical stuff: Climbing statistics are computed as (Maximum elevation - Minimum elevation) / (Length of Climb). This method ignores mid-climb descents, and just computes an average grade. It is a judgement call as to where a climb starts and ends. I have ignored long undulating rises that approach a climb, and report the heart of the climb. As for categorizing climbs, I refered to this chart of Tour De France categorized climbs, and to this rating description.

Every climb can become a descent, just bike backwards! Best examples of category climbs:

• Cat 4 - Rancho Santa Fe, El Secreto
• Cat 3 - North County, Circle R, or San Diego, Nautilus
• Cat 2 - Jamul, Honey Springs
• Cat 1 - Palomar Mountain, South Grade
• Hors Categorie - Rancho Cucamonga, Mt Baldy
